Clarke County dispatchers received a call Monday, Nov. 29 at approximately 9: 07 p.m. that a male was screaming, making threats, and firing a gun on Hickory Street in Coffeeville. Coffeeville Police officers, Clarke County deputies, Choctaw County deputies, Jackson Police officers, and Grove Hill Police officers were dispatched to that location. While deputies and officers were en route, dispatchers received multiple calls from the suspect, Nakias Causey, threatening to kill officers when they arrived.

Upon arrival, deputies and officers established a containment perimeter and determined that Causey was monitoring their radio communications with a scanner. He was observed to be armed with and swinging a baseball bat and was making numerous threats to law enforcement.

Negotiations were initiated between the law enforcement and Causey who continued to threaten to kill deputies and officers while pointing the bat at them. As negotiations deteriorated, Causey approached a team member with the bat and was quickly subdued.

Causey was arrested and transported to the Clarke County Jail.

A search warrant was obtained and a search of the area revealed items which included a loaded hand gun, a police scanner, a jar with a substance believed to be marijuana, and other drug paraphernalia.

Causey was charged with Terroristic Threats, Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Pistol, Menacing, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Marijuana Second Degree, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. In addition, Causey has multiple warrants out of Choctaw County.

Sheriff DeWayne Smith identified three specific reasons for a successful arrest with minimal force. First and foremost, is God’s protective hand. Second, is the highly trained law enforcement agencies which responded. In addition to civilian SWAT training, most have prior military experience and the ability to deescalate high risk situations. And third is the cooperation of local police and sheriff’s departments to train and work together as a well-oiled machine.
