Feb. 2 was Groundhog Day. New York Daily News editorial cartoonist Bill Bramhall riffed on the silly ceremony by drawing the coronavirus emerging into the light — and seeing its shadow. Six weeks more of pandemic? If only. But it’s good news that Covid-19 case counts and hospitalizations are plummeting.

Editorial cartoonists also commented on the dismissal of CNN President Jeff Zucker after he admitted he should have disclosed a romantic relationship with a co-worker. Commentators saw Zucker as another casualty of the scandal that consumed New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his brother, former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki’s defense of the administration’s response to crime came in for criticism from Michael Ramirez of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Dana Summers of Tribune Content Agency.

Other topics in the news included the continuing back and forth over President Joe Biden’s intention to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court; U.S. diplomatic and military moves in Ukraine; the opening of the Winter Olympics in Beijing; a lawsuit by former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores accusing the NFL of racial discrimination in hiring decisions; the unveiling of a new name, the Commanders, for the Washington football team; and partisan redistricting.

Cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and A.F. Branco, Mike Luckovich and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
